Hurricane Irene blew in over the weekend. After experiencing several category 2 and 3 hurricanes in South Florida during the 5 years that I lived there I was not looking forward to it. Being without power sucks, but it was workable when it was only the 2 of us. We had running water, we would grill our thawing food with neighbors and hang out. Now, we have no running water when the power is out because we have a well, which means...NO flushing potties. And then there are those 2 small children in our house, one of which is heavily dependent on TV and an iPad. We lost power 2 weeks ago during a thunderstorm for about 4 hours, and child #2 asked me to turn on Mickey Mouse 100 times in that short time period. UGH.
Anyhow, we went to Lancaster for the weekend for a wedding. We never lost power at Mimi's house, and amazingly, never lost power at home. It really was a shock. We ended up with a few inches of water in the basement, but that's it. Major flooding in the local creek. Here is a picture from the end of the street where the creek (which is far from this photo) had record flooding. It never looks like much in a photo, but it was amazing.
The kids were a big help the next day, picking up all of the sticks and tree limbs in the yard. They also collected tons of walnuts that were knocked out of the trees.
Ava went back out later in the afternoon and collected more!
